Popular Remedies to Help with Stretch Marks

Stretch marks are a discoloration of skin that forms a band or ridge, similar to scars, that may appear on the abdomen, thighs, buttocks, chest or upper arms. When someone gains weight rapidly, the dermis layer of skin is stretched until it cracks, leaving fine scars on the skin’s surface. Stretch marks may form from the likes of pregnancy, puberty, bodybuilding or gaining weight fast. Some stretch marks may fade over time. However, you can try these popular remedies to see if they work for you and reduce the appearance of the marks.

Vitamins E and Olive Oil for Skin Elasticity

Vitamin E reduces stretch marks by promoting skin elasticity. Pour about a cup of olive oil into small plastic bottle. Take five vitamin E gel caps and pierce them with a pin. Squeeze the gel caps to squirt the vitamin E into the bottle. Put on the lid and shake to combine. Massage the vitamin-enriched olive oil into areas of skin affected by stretch marks.

Yogurt and Honey Stretch Mark Remedy

The lactic acid in yogurt helps to lighten skin while stimulating collagen production. Honey is a natural humectant that keeps skin moist and supple. Combine a cup of natural Greek yogurt with a tablespoon of honey. Apply the mixture over your stretch marks and leave it on for 20 to 30 minutes before rinsing. Repeat daily to help marks fade.

Grapefruit and Coconut Oil

Grapefruit juice is a natural skin lightener which can help to fade stretch marks. Coconut oil moisturizes skin and increases elasticity. Mix together three tablespoons of coconut oil with one tablespoon of grapefruit juice. Massage the lotion into any areas of skin that show stretch marks. Use twice a day for best results.

Ladys Mantle Massage

Lady’s mantle is an herb that reduces the appearance of stretch marks by inhibiting the breakdown of the skin’s elastic and connective tissues. Combine a tablespoon of lady’s mantle extract with a 12 ounce bottle of your favorite moisturizing skin lotion. Massage into areas with stretch marks three times a day.

Baking Soda for Stretch Marks

Baking soda is a natural exfoliant. It improves the appearance of stretch marks by removing dead skin cells from the surface layer. Every time you shower, squeeze some shower gel or body wash onto a washcloth and pour on about a teaspoon of baking soda. Fold the cloth and rub it between your hands to combine the baking soda with the liquid soap. Scrub your stretch marks and rinse.

 

Does Potato Juice Work

Potatoes contain bleaching agents that can make stretch marks less noticeable. Grate a potato and squeeze the shreds over a bowl to extract the juice. Use a cotton ball to apply the potato juice over the stretch marks and surrounding skin. Leave it to work for 15 minutes before rinsing. Repeat twice daily for best results.

Aloe Vera Gel is Popular for Healing the Skin

Aloe vera is known for its skin-healing properties. If you have an aloe vera houseplant, use a sharp knife to cut into one of the fleshy leaves and squeeze it to extract the thick fluid inside. Massage the gel into any skin areas covered with stretch marks. For best results, apply aloe vera at least twice a day.

Apple Cider Vinegar Moisturizer

The acetic and malic acid in apple cider vinegar helps to break up scar tissue to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Fill a spray bottle with apple cider vinegar and spritz over your stretch marks each night before bedtime. Wash it off in your morning shower. Apply moisturizer if the vinegar makes your skin feel dry.

Lemon Juice

The citric acid in lemon juice has a bleaching effect that evens out skin tone to reduce the appearance of stretch marks. Every night before bedtime, apply lemon juice to the stretch marks and surrounding areas with a cotton ball. Wash off any residue in your morning shower. Do not put lemon juice on broken skin. If it stings, rinse the area immediately.

Egg White Mask

Egg whites contain amino acids which nourish the skin and help to keep it smooth and elastic. Separate two eggs and beat the whites to form stiff peaks. Apply a thick layer of egg white over your stretch marks. Allow the whites to dry until they become powdery. (You can speed up the process with a blow dryer.)
